Making Divorce Emotionally Easier

Getting a divorce is an emotionally charged experience, even if you’re the spouse that primarily wants the separation. When things become heated, your divorce can take longer and become more stressful overall. Here are some ways you can uncomplicate a difficult divorce and how to get experienced legal support.

Try to Compromise If You Can

You’re unlikely to win every issue in your divorce; statistically, it’s becoming less common for one spouse to be “cleaned out” and the other to come out golden. Instead, the most successful divorces are the result of careful and conscientious compromise on both sides.

Try to pick your battles, so to speak, and identify what you are and are not willing or able to make compromises on. If there’s something you can easily compromise on, doing so can make it easier for you to put up a fight on issues you have more difficulty making concessions on.

Avoid Communicating Verbally

One of the biggest mistakes that a person getting a divorce can make is to communicate verbally about important matters with their ex-spouse. For example, if you agree on a different visitation time after speaking on the phone with your ex, you should follow up with a text or email confirming the new date and time, as per the phone conversation at [Date, Time].

Remember that verbal agreements hold little to no weight in court and can even be used against you if reneging on a verbal deal benefits the other party. Protect yourself by having everything in writing.

Consider Mediation

If you and your ex are at least on somewhat civil terms, mediation may be an option for you to talk through potential solutions for your divorce in a neutral setting. A mediator is a third party that helps you and your ex facilitate a conversation about divorce specifics, like who will get the house or what custody and visitation might look like.

If you and your ex reach agreements on everything, the mediator and your individual attorneys will draw up your divorce decree and submit it to the court on your behalf without the need for divorce litigation.
